It is believed Codman apprenticed with clockmakers, Simon and Aaron Willard of Roxbury and after that sign-painter, John Ritto Penniman of Roxbury and Boston. In 1828, art critic John Neal touted his work, having seen it on a visit to Portland, and this recognition was a significant boost to Codman's career. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum and the National Academy of Design in New York City. In his romantic landscapes, human figures are diminished, and the lighting is manipulated to heighten drama.
