The scion of a distinguished artistic family and the son of the famous still life painter Jan Davidsz de Heem, Cornelis de Heem was born in Leiden in 1631. Cornelis received his first painterly training in his father's studio in Antwerp. From 1660 his name appears in the registers of the Antwerp Saint Luke's Guild. This was followed by longer stays in other Dutch art centers such as Utrecht and The Hague. From the early 1680s he was back in Antwerp, where he remained until the end of his life.... Cornelis received his first painterly training in his father's studio in Antwerp. From 1660 his name appears in the registers of the Antwerp Saint Luke's Guild. This was followed by longer stays in other Dutch art centers such as Utrecht and The Hague. From the early 1680s he was back in Antwerp, where he remained until the end of his life. His main focus is on still life of fruit, sometimes supplemented by flowers and sometimes with food such as lobsters and oysters and decorative tableware.
