Daniel Saint is considered one of the greatest French miniaturist nineteenth century. Born in Saint Lô in 1778. He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault (School of David) and Augustine and Aubry. He made many portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon, Queen Hortense), sovereign of the Restoration (Prince Eugene) and the July Monarchy (Charles X). He returned to Saint Lô in 1842 where he died in 1847. The Museum of Fine Arts in the city has a few copies of his works.... Read full biography

Deviating from the method Isabey who proceeded by the dotted line and that of Augustine who use glaze, like Aubry, he employed the hatching thus obtaining force effects in shades and relief in the model.
