Teniers was an innovator in painting a variety of genres such as history, genre, landscape, portrait and still life. He is particularly known for the development of peasant genre such as bar scenes. He founded the Antwerp Academy in 1664. Teniers III married Anna Maria Bonnarens on 4 April 1671 and fathered five children. The eldest child, David Teniers IV (1672-1731), appears to have been yet another painter in the dynasty and painted in the style of his more celebrated father.
