After graduating from Manteo High School, Dean attended East Carolina University where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture with a painting minor. He taught sculpture and three dimensional design classes at Mitchell Community College and later at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the late 1970's.
