He was a pupil of Arthur Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Institute and of Frank DuMond and Charles Hawthorne at the Art Students League in New York City. By 1908 he was dedicated to painting scenes of the rugged Monterey coast and the oak trees of Solano County.
