Brandt was awarded a gold medal 1st class, at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and became a member of the vetting team of the organization. Brandt was awarded a gold medal 1st class, at the Salon des Artistes Francais, and became a member of the vetting team of the organization. In 1904, he was ordered to go to Toul near Nancy for military service. There it became apparent to him that the French Infantry had no light versatile weapon with a long target-range.
