A landscape painter, Rasmussen Eilersen trained in Faaborg and Copenhagen. However, the outbreak of the First Schleswig War interrupted his plans when he was drafted into the army. He served for two years and then resumed his studies. In 1858 the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts awarded him a travel scholarship which enabled him to visit Paris, Italy, the Pyrenees and Switzerland. In 1871 he became a member of the Academy.
