He first began teaching for pattern makers in a cotton factory in Eilenburg. From 1863-70, he studied at the Grand Ducal Saxon Weimar art school. In 1870, his study was interrupted by military service and participation in the Franco-German war. From 1873-81, he became a teacher at the Weimar drawing and crafts school. In 1882, he became a teacher of freehand drawing at the Grand Ducal Saxon school of Art Weimar. Starting in 1882, and lasting until 1891, he was a high school teacher in Erfurt.
