He was a teacher at the Gymnasium of St. Stephan in Straßburg before going on a study trip. He then continued studying at the Academy in Munich at Wilhelm von Lindenschmit (1886-90). In 1900 the painter moved to Fürstenfeldbruck, where he was a founding member and chairman of the ‘Brucker’ association of artists. He was appointed royal academy professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria in 1911.
