He began his art studies at The Art Students League, studying with George Luks, and at the National Academy of Design. For a short time, he was a student of Howard Giles, an exponent of dynamic symmetry. In the 1920's he pursued his studies further in Paris, Florence, and Rome, torn, as he said, "between the modern and the Old Masters." .
