Charman was born in Richmond, on the edge of London in England, and having established a reputation as a painter, he took up a teaching post in the Faculty of Design at Syracuse University in 1923. He eventually retired in 1960 from the position of Professor of Art at Syracuse. Charman also pursued a successful career as a creative artist.
