He studied at the Vienna Academy from 1844 and was a pupil of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. He went on a study trip to Italy in 1850 and stayed in Düsseldorf from 1851-54, where he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten. In 1854, he went to Paris and turned to genre painting. He went on a study trip to Italy in 1850 and stayed in Düsseldorf from 1851-54, where he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten. In 1854, he went to Paris and turned to genre painting. He lived in Vienna from 1856 and became a member of the Academy in 1866. In 1869, he was one of the main co-founders of the Vienna Artists' Association.
