He returned to Düsseldorf, where he lived and worked until his death in 1892. In his early work he treated the subject of historical painting, whereas in his later years he turned to genre painting. His most famous work Preußische Werber unter Friedrich dem Großen (Prussian promoters under Friedrich the Great) from 1873 is on display in the National Gallery in Berlin.
