He co-founded the 'Vereinigung der XI' which had its first exhibition in 1892 at the Galerie Schulte in Berlin. He was later appointed as a member of the Society of German Watercolour Painters and for a period was active in the Munich Secession. Stahl traveled to England in 1899 in order to further his interest and study of the Pre-Raphaelites.
