From 1878-84 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy first with Hugo Crola and Heinrich Lauenstein and later with Peter Janssen and Eugen Dücker. After training (1885), he settled in Hamburg, where he became a member of the Hamburg Artist Association in 1832.
