Gabriel Cornelis de Jongh, a Dutch-born South African artist, moved to Cape Town with his family at the age of nine in 1922. He was the son of the well-known landscape artist Tinus de Jongh. Gabriel de Jongh started his artistic journey by learning watercolour techniques from his father and later pursued formal art education at various institutions in South Africa and the UK. Despite serving in the Civil Defence Corps during World War II and being called for service by the Dutch Government, de Jongh continued to paint and draw in his free time. He traveled extensively but found his favorite subject in the landscapes of the Western Cape. His shift to oil painting marked a significant change in his artistic style.
