He was evacuated with his brother and mother to Oxford during the war, where he discovered the Ashmolean Museum. He later went on to study under Bernard Meninksy, Ruskin Spear and Rodrigo Moynihan. He had an extensive knowledge of oil painting through obsessive study, and could rival any scholar. He had an extensive knowledge of oil painting through obsessive study, and could rival any scholar. He painted solidly for 73 years and was thought very highly of, but sometimes his work seemed out of tune with the times, the art critic Brian Sewell said of him, he ''painted the right pictures at the wrong time.''
