After a visit to the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts Salzburg with Claus Pack, he studied from 1978 to 1983 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and Arnulf Rainer. In 1992 he took on a visiting professorship at the Vienna Academy (Master Class in Graphic Design) in Vienna, where he was Full Professor since 1998. In the 1980s Damisch was a member of the Viennese punk band Molto gross, where he played bass and organ. Gunter Damisch lived and worked in Vienna and Freidegg.
