He was the son of Amelie (nee Steiner), and Baron Renauld Oscar Adelswärd, a captain in the French General Staff, later the head of the National Guard in Nancy, and a member of the French National Assembly. He was the son of Amelie (nee Steiner), and Baron Renauld Oscar Adelswärd, a captain in the French General Staff, later the head of the National Guard in Nancy, and a member of the French National Assembly. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. Gustave studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, eventually becoming a successful, respected artist. His works featured the French landscape as well as scenes from Italy and southern Germany. Surprisingly, Gustave chose an artistic path rather than follow his family with a career in politics or the military, befitting the upper stratum of society into which he had been born. Gustave studied under Léon Bonnat in Paris, eventually becoming a successful, respected artist. His works featured the French landscape as well as scenes from Italy and southern Germany.
