In 1937 he was accepted into the arts school in Stettin, where he studied until 1940 under the former Bauhaus student Vincent Weber. After the Second World War, Laabs went to Berlin and co-founded the surrealist artist revue ‘Die Badewanne’ [The Bathtub]. He was also a member of the Neue Gruppe Berlin.
