He was born in Rochester, New York and earned his B.A. degree at the University of Rochester in 1951. From 1955 to 1956, he studied at the University of Chicago, and from 1962 to 1964, he was artist-in-residence there. He was a member of the Cliff Dwellers and Arts Club of Chicago. He exhibited five times at the Art Institute of Chicago where in 1962, he won the Pauline Palmer award. He also won the Logan Gold Medal for sculpture.
