He studied at the Städelschen Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt under Jakob Becker and Moritz von Schwind. In 1852, he received a travel grant from the Städel Institute and spent time in Paris. In 1861, he participated as an expedition painter in the Nordland expedition of Georg Berna and Carl Vogt. Hasselhorst was active in Frankfurt until his death in 1904.
