Helen Stewart was a New Zealand modernist painter who studied under Harry Linley Richardson in Wellington before moving to London and Paris to further her studies. She was influenced by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, and the Camden Town artists. She returned to Australia in 1930 and became a member of the avant-garde Contemporary Art Society. After returning to New Zealand after the war, she settled in Lowry Bay, Wellington, and was a founding member of the Thursday Group art collective. She continued to paint until her death in 1983 and was included in Anne Kirker’s publication New Zealand Women Artists: a Survey of 150 Years.
