Hermann Sondermann was born in Berlin and received his first artistic training from Johann Samuel Otto. In Antwerp he continued his studies at the studio of Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans. He finally moved to Düsseldorf, where he completed his professional training under Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and Rudolf Jordan.
