The poet and painter Hermann Hesse, became famous for his literary work. In the spring 1919, he moved from Bern to Ticino, and moved to the village of Montagnola near Lugano. In this part of his life he was fascinated by painting, as well as by his literary activity. He held close contact with the painters Louis Moilliet, Jean Lurçat and Cuno Amiet. He presented his works in Davos, Basel, and Lugano. In the 1930's, he concentrated on the watercolor technique by means of which he captured colorful seascapes, villages, forests, mountains and valleys of his Ticino home. These delicate and mostly small-scale works are characterized by naive views with contours often highlighted by feather or charcoal.
