Hubert Berchtold began painting during the Second World War when he took evening classes at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen, Belgium. After the end of the war he visited the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, where he studied under Hubert Boeckl and Josef Dobrowsky. Inspired by travels to France and Spain he translates in his works influences from French painting. In the 1960s he developed his own style in many different series, which is neither abstract nor naturalistic. His works are characterized by dynamic compositions in strong colours. He studied the human body and landscape painting equally intensively.
