He eventually started at the Art Academy in Stockholm and later switched to the Artists' Association's painting school under Richard Bergh's leadership, but soon realized that this doctrine did not appeal to him and therefore returned to Valand. Back in Sweden after studying in Europe, he married Eva Adler in 1906 and then their daughter Eva was born, for most of them remembered as Lillan.
