Guthrie was born in Greenock, the youngest son of the Rev. John Guthrie, a clergyman, and Ann Orr. He originally enrolled at Glasgow University to study law, but abandoned this in favour of painting in 1877. He originally enrolled at Glasgow University to study law, but abandoned this in favour of painting in 1877.
