He founded an artistic group named Sursum, and was a member of the Mánes, Tvrdošíjní (Obstinates), Umelecká beseda and Hollar (Czech Graphic Association) artistic associations. He was a mysterious, solitary artist with his own melancholic world, rarely open to anybody else.
