Jan Sluijters belonged to the first generation of 'modern' painters in The Netherlands, together with Dutch painters Leo Gestel en Piet Mondriaan. He started his artistic training at the Amsterdam Art Academy in 1901. In Paris, Sluijters was introduced to the work of Van Gogh, Cézanne and Les Fauves.
