Jaroslav Serpan was born in Prague in 1922 to Russian parents. The family moved to Paris in 1922. There, Serpan studied biology and mathematics at the Sorbonne, but began to paint in 1940. He first joined the Surrealist movement. Later he was influenced artistically by Tàpies, Masson, and Wols and developed his art toward informal. In 1959, Serpan took part in documenta 2 in Kassel.
