After the German occupation of France, Jean-Michel lost his work in teaching and lived in poverty in Montparnasse. During this time though he devoted himself to painting and other artistic pursuits. Following the liberation of France, Jean-Michel first published a poem collection. His breakthrough with regard to painting occurred through an exhibition at the Galerie Bing in 1956.
