Jean Launois, a self-taught painter, was awarded the Abd-el-Tif scholarship in 1920 and stayed in Algiers, where he painted popular life, the Kasbah and the reserved quarters. Influenced by Albert Marquet, he refined his style and traveled to Indochina. His first major exhibition in Paris in 1926 was a great success. Divided between France and Algeria, he died prematurely in Algiers in 1942. His works are kept in several museums, including the Paris Museum of Modern Art.
