Estelle Mary (Jo) Sweatman, an Australian painter born in 1872 in South Yarra, Victoria, studied at Melbourne’s National Gallery School under Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall. She initially focused on portraiture but later became known for her landscape paintings, particularly of the Warrandyte region in Victoria. Sweatman was a prominent painter of wattle and was a member of various art societies, including the Victorian Artists Society and the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society. She also contributed to the development of the Warrandyte artistic community and was a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 1922.
