Before he was fourteen, he was working in a cotton merchants office, and it was while he was employed there that Mr W S Caine, a prominent Liverpool figure who was later to become Member of Parliament for Scarborough, noticed some of his sketches and took John to see John Finney, headmaster of the Liverpool Institute. John McDougal was persuaded to take up painting on a full time basis. He was a prolific water color artist and had... Read full biography

Before he was fourteen, he was working in a cotton merchants office, and it was while he was employed there that Mr W S Caine, a prominent Liverpool figure who was later to become Member of Parliament for Scarborough, noticed some of his sketches and took John to see John Finney, headmaster of the Liverpool Institute. John McDougal was persuaded to take up painting on a full time basis. He was a prolific water color artist and had his own studio in Liverpool. In 1900 he and his family moved to Cemaes Bay, Anglesey, Wales where he set up his studio and continued to paint until he lost his sight later in his life. He died in 1945 and is buried on Anglesey.
