John Wilson Ewbank (1779-1847). A Scottish land-and seascape painter, he was born in Gateshead. Ewbank worked for a house painter named Coulson but later moved to Edinburgh and studied with Alexander Nasmyth. His technique and subject matter were strongly influenced by the Dutch Masters of the seventeenth century, in particular by Van der Velde.
