Born in 1743 in Paris, Jules César Denis Van Loo was heir to the tradition of a well-known family of artists of Flemish origin, including his uncle Jean-Baptiste and his father Charles-Andrè. For family reasons, he was linked to Italy, since his mother came from the beautiful country. After his Parisian beginnings he moved to Turin, where he worked at the Piedmontese court of the Savoy. His production is marked by eighteenth-century landscaping in which, however, the passionate sensitivity of romanticism is felt. During his stay in Italy he got to know the work of Francesco Foschi and his snow-covered landscapes: a subject that, subsequently, Van Loo will deal with assiduously.
