Settling in Madrid from 1920, he founded a Free Academy of Art and taught notable students like Salvador Dalí. Known for his genre painting and female portraiture, he was appointed director of the School of Fine Arts in 1946 and became an academician of the San Fernando School in Madrid in 1947.
