In its heyday, over 130 artists were working there including Fritz Mackensen, Clara Westhoff and Otto and Paula Modersohn. Its origins as an art colony are attributed to Mimi Stolte, daughter of a Worpswede shopkeeper, who met Fritz Mackensen when he was a young art student.
