Karl Schickhardt was born in 1866 Esslingen. He was the son of the Stuttgart district court director Hermann Schickhardt, from a respected industrial family. Karl studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart 1884-1887 under Albert Kappis and Jakob Grünenwald and from 1887-1892 private student of Josef Wenglein in Munich.
