He was a portrait artist whose sitters included Lord Attlee and Lord Halifax. Gowing later became an acclaimed art historian and curator, writing about artists such as Vermeer, Hogarth, Cezanne, Turner, Matisse, and Lucien Freud. In 1985, he was appointed honorary curator of the Royal Academy of Arts collection.
