In 1867, Romanach was sent by his widower father to Spain where he completed his early education including several years of study in Barcelona where he was influenced by the important Catalonian painter Mariano Fortuny. Romanach returned to Cuba in 1877. Romanach returned to Cuba in 1877. While studying the English language in New York City during a six month sojourn there, Romanach also studied the Old Master painting collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1885 he enrolled in the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana. Four years later he won a prestigious scholarship that allowed him to study in Rome.
