Born in London, England, he studied art at he Sir Joh Cass Institute in London, as well as with his father, Charles William Salmon. He left England in 1906, traveling throughout British Columbia, Idaho, Utah, Montana and Washington, settling in Tacoma in 1913. He became known as the unofficial painter of Mt. Rainier.
