Louis-David Saugy was born in the village of Gérignoz, near Chateau d Oex, Switzerland, in 1871. As child he started to draw under the guidance of his mother, who was a school mistress, and the learned to cut designs from his father, who was a farmer. He completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in the company of his uncle Alois. At 32 years of age, he became a postman in Rougement, and continued cutting designs.
