His training as a painter began at the School of Painting in Madrid, where he was a pupil of Alejandro Ferrant. In 1886, thanks to a scholarship, he moved to Rome in order to complete his training. There he was a student of Francisco Pradilla and José Villegas. He traveled to Naples, Venice and Florence, where he attended the Ussi Academy. On his return to Spain he obtained a great reputation obtaining numerous prizes and medals in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts (1890, 1892, 1899) and made important assignments as the decoration of one of the domes of the church of San Francisco el Grande de Madrid.
