Erchun followed Yan Wenliang, one of the pioneers of modern Chinese art, to learn the forms of Western classical art and styles of impressionist art. With such bedrock, he became the first artist of his time who broke free from the confinement of plain landscape realism, and shifted to create with expressive and strong colours.
