In 1850 Schmid took an apprenticeship with Gottlieb Egger for Tuifelemaler in Tarrenz. In 1853 he was in Munich. There from 1853-56 he worked as a gilder in Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt for ecclesiastical art. He was also temporarily active in Innsbruck.
