In 1910, he participated in the exhibition of the 'Berliner Secession' and later joined the 'Free Secession' under the direction of Max Liebermann (1847-1935). He was close to the artists of 'Die Brücke', painting primarily landscapes, nude figures and flowers, as well as working as a graphic artist. During his residence at the Pomeranian coast, he met Corinth and Pechstein, who remarkably influenced Beyer's work.
