He was trained at the Academy Minerva where he received drawing and painting lessons from the director and historical painter J.H. Egenberger (1822-1897), who also taught Hendrik Willem and his brother Taco Mesdag. After leaving the Academy, Eerelman moved to Antwerp where he was rewarded with the Prix d'excellence. Egenberger (1822-1897), who also taught Hendrik Willem and his brother Taco Mesdag. After leaving the Academy, Eerelman moved to Antwerp where he was rewarded with the Prix d'excellence. In Antwerp Eerelman worked in the studio of the renowned Dutch painter Lawrence Alma Tadema (1836-1912), who taught him the principles of painting.
